A facilitator opens the session, sets the first prompt, and starts the clock. You write. When the time is up, you can read what you made aloud, or simply listen while others read theirs.

What Is the Imaginative Storm Writing Circle

What Happens in a Writing Circle Session
Each session follows a simple, repeatable structure, which is part of why it works. The facilitator introduces a prompt, and you write for ten minutes. Something happens in those ten minutes that is hard to explain until you have felt it. The clock removes the pressure to be good, the prompt points you somewhere unexpected, and what surfaces on the page often surprises the person who wrote it.
Then comes the part that changes people. You read your words aloud, or you listen as others read theirs, and the room responds. To be heard, and taken seriously, by other writers does something solitary writing never quite manages. The facilitator closes with a brief craft observation, the kind of small, sharp insight you carry into your own work without it ever feeling like a lesson. You leave with real writing on the page and a thread worth pulling all week.
